Thankful for the Future

I have a lot to be thankful for. A lot. I was reminded of this last Sunday, when for the 9th straight year, I joined my friends in Washington, DC for our annual “friends-giving” potluck dinner. The event has surely grown over the years. I can remember one of the first potluck dinners when we all fit around a dining room table.  But as the years have passed and our community has grown, we’ve been lucky to bring more and more people into the annual tradition.

Last Sunday nearly 30 people filled my friend's home, bringing with them not only side dishes and desserts, but also friendship and love and the desire to spend time with one another, reminiscing about the past, enjoying the present, and looking forward to the future. This is one of those traditions that I am incredibly thankful for, and which I hope we continue for years and years to come.

And now thanks to our friends at Daily Candy, we have a new tradition to add into the mix! The Gratitude Jar. Check out the Gratitude Jar video Daily Candy Kids launched today.

What I love about this tradition is that it reminds us to be thoughtful in our gratitude every day, not just one day out of the year. So here's an idea - for the next week, let's each write down one thing we are thankful for every day on a slip of paper. Then let’s ask our friends and family to do the same. Collect them. Put them in a bowl, a jar or cup. Use this as a centrepiece for your Thanksgiving dinner!

And a week from today, as we gather with friends and family for Thanksgiving dinner, let’s share our thankfulness and gratitude with one another. And be sure to share them with our Future Fortified community so we can share in your gratitude!

This is the type of tradition we could use every day, because every day we have something to be thankful for. And for this, I am thankful for the future.
