Malnutrition rates in Bangladesh are among the highest in the world mainly because people don’t consume enough key nutrients including vitamin A, iron and iodine. In fact, 87% of babies under the age of two suffer from iron deficiency anemia, limiting their brain development, the strength of their immune system,  and their physical growth. Especially in rural areas, many families are unable to provide their children with diverse, nutrient-rich meals either because they cannot access them or because they are too expensive.

But Future Fortified is helping to change this. At just pennies a day, vitamin and mineral powder, known as home nutrition packets, are a proven cost-effective way for mothers to get essential nutrients into their children’s diets, nourishing them during the most critical 1,000 day window of growth and development. 

In order to make nutrition affordable and accessible to rural families in Bangladesh, it means going door-to-door with home nutrition packets. We are working with our on-the-ground partner BRAC, the largest NGO in Bangladesh, to train and empower 85,000 village women health volunters about the importance of good nutrition and the use of home nutrition packets.

These health volunteers, known locally as Shasthya Shebikas, are respected women in their local village. They travel door-to-door educating mothers about health issues impacting their families and also carry healthcare products, like home nutrition packets, that can address a family’s needs. Thanks to the support of a local pharmaceutical company in Bangladesh - Renata - these home nutrition packets can be sold at 3 taka, or about just 3 cents each, a price families can afford.
